Supreme Court notice on PRP symbol

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to the Election Commission and the Praja Rajyam on allotting the rail engine symbol to the Chiranjeevi party. The Supreme Court was dealing with a petition filed by the Uttar Pradesh-based Rashtriya Krantikar Samajwadi Party, which objected to the allotment of the rail engine symbol to the Praja Rajyam. The apex court bench comprising Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice P. Sathasivam, ask-ed for the Election Com-mission’s reply and posted the matter to April 9, just a week before the first phase of polls in the state.
The UP party had appro-ached the apex court on Wednesday stating that it had contested the 2004 el-ections with the rail engine symbol. It said it planned to contest seats in AP and opt for that symbol again. However, it has not filed nominations in the first phase. The PR has made light of the UP party’s contention. “Since it is not a recognised party, it has not got a reserved symbol. So their claim doesn’t have any value,” said Mr P. Prabha-kar, the PR spokesperson
