YSR nips expansion plans of Krishnapatnam power plant

Barely seven months after Congress president Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for the project, the Y S Rajasekhara Reddy government has nipped the expansion plans of APGenco’s Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station at Krishnapatnam in Nellore district.

This in order to favour a thermal plant promoted by a Congress MP, who incidentally is not close to the chief minister.

The Congress chief had laid the foundation stone for the 1,600 MW thermal power plant of APGenco on July 17, 2008. Soon after, the state cabinet took a decision to name the project after dalit leader Damodaram Sanjeevaiah.

Based on the fact that APGenco has been consistently winning awards as best power performer, the Union power ministry gave a directive that Genco should expand the capacity of its Krishnapatnam project from 1,600 MW to 4,000 MW. This was in line with its policy of encouraging coastal power plants to be set up by credible PSUs like Genco.

After the expansion plans were cleared, 859 acres of land was allotted in Krishnapatnam and all the necessary clearances obtained.

However, on February 6, the state government issued a GO directing Genco to hand over the 859 acres of land meant for the expansion of its plant to be handed over to the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) for onward transfer to Thermal Powertech Corporation, being promoted by the son of former Union minister and serving MP.

According to sources, the state government displayed an unusual alacrity and swiftness in taking the land from Genco and handing it over to the privatepower plant. “It looks as though the state government came under sudden political pressure on behalf of Powertech because of which the expansion plans of a great performer like Genco was thrown to the winds and the land given to the private company,” former Union power secretary E A S Sarma told TOI.

Sources claimed that the state government moved swiftly to bail out Thermaltech as any further delay would have meant that the Union coal ministry would have cancelled the coal linkages given to the plant.

Thermal Powertech had initially been allotted land in Machilipatnam in a prohibited coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) for its thermal plant.

However, after environmentalists raised a hue and cry on the grounds that the ecosystem and the breeding ground for rare birds there would be destroyed by the establishment of the plant, the environmental impact assessment committee under the Union ministry of environment and forests denied clearances for the private power plant there.

Within weeks after the land allotment in Machilipatnam was cancelled, the state directed APGenco to surrender the 859 acres given to it for the expansion plan to APIIC.

Naidu, YSR take fight to New Delhi

Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday took their political war to New Delhi, with Naidu national capital seeking prosecution of the CM for corruption and the state Congress wasting no time in dashing off a letter to the President demanding a central probe against the TDP president on similar charges.

Naidu’s efforts to meet the President on Wednesday and submit a memorandum listing the charges against YSR turned futile as she was said to be away in Maharashtra and not expected until Thursday evening.

Forced to stay put in New Delhi, Naidu and other leaders of his alliance spent the day meeting external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee and holding a press conference for the national media.

Describing YSR as ‘Raja of Corruption,’ Naidu, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, CPM state secretary B V Raghavulu and CPI state secretary K Narayana charged that the CM had accumulated crores of rupees by ‘abusing his power and indulging in corruption and money-laundering.’

A four-page note circulated to the media listed the names of bogus front companies floated by the YSR family, including son Jaganmohan Reddy, through which the money-laundering was allegedly taking place.

“From the accounts of dubious transactions in respect of only three companies, ie, Sandur Power Company, Jagathi Publications and Bharathi Cement Corporation, the YSR family is richer by Rs 10,000 crore. Hence, the TDP, TRS, CPM and CPI demand immediate initiation of prosecution under the relevant laws,” the note said.

Meanwhile, the Congress Legislature Party on Wednesday shot off a letter to President Pratiba Patil urging her to institute a probe into the affairs of Heritage Foods Limited, a listed company promoted by the family members of Naidu.

The letter says, “Close on the heels of Satyam scam, we have stumbled upon yet another fraud by none other than N Chandrababu Naidu. Certain documents relating to Heritage Foods Limited clearly establish that the investors of Heritage Foods were cheated by the wife and family of Naidu in the same way as B Ramalinga Raju cheated his investors in Satyam.’’

Former Indian cricket skipper Md Azharuddin joins Congress

Former Indian cricket skipper Md Azharuddin on Thursday joined congress party.

"If the party thinks I am good enough (to contest elections) I will do. As of now, I don't know anything," said Azharuddin.

"I have always been an admirer of Congress which fought for independence and I want to give back something to the nation by joining politics," added the former Indian skipper.

Earlier in the day, Speaking exclusively to TIMES NOW, the AICC general secretary Moily said, "I know him since 25 years. He expressed his desire to join the Congress. He wants the Congress to come back to power. I took up this matter with the Congress president, who has agreed to admit him into the party."

When asked whether he will contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls from Andhra Pradesh, Moily said, "Till today we have not discussed the constituency. He is joining the party unconditionally. He is very fond of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The matter whether he will contest for the LS polls will be discussed later."

When quizzed on whether the party is worried about Azhar's past, as there is a life-ban imposed on him by the BCCI, Moily added, "There is no criminal case against Azhar. If there is a case at all then it is only between the BCCI and him, which has been filed by Azhar himself against the ban."

Justifying Congress' decision to induct Azhar into the party, Moily said, "Remember, he served the Indian cricket for 9 years as a captain with outstanding performance. He has filed a case against the ban imposed by the BCCI and that is not a criminal matter."

Meanwhile, he decided not to comment on actor Sanjay Dutt's admission into the Samajwadi Party saying, "We have no comment on Sanjay Dutt. It is up to him to join any party he wants."

Earlier, reports suggested that Azharuddin is scheduled to meet Congress chief Sonia Gandhi after which he is likely to visit the party headquarters and formally announce his foray into the world of politics.

Already in New Delhi, Azhar had a late-evening meeting with some of the senior party leaders on Wednesday (February 18).

Reports stated that the Congress is likely to field Azharuddin on his home turf Andhra Pradesh, where the Congress can cash in on his popularity.

Inducting the former skipper into the party is part of a Congress plan to accommodate celebrities from different fields. This is in keeping with the party effort to project a youthful and happening image for itself.

Known for his fabled catching abilities, Azhar can face a tough challenge to prove that there will be no misses on the new turf as well.
