The government function meant to launch `Abhayahastam' pension scheme for women self help groups (SHG) turned out to be a political propaganda platform with chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and Congress MP U Arun Kumar openly seeking votes for the Congress party.
The contributory pension scheme for the SHG members was launched on Friday at the Agriculture University in Rajendranagar, where a large number of women members were brought to the programme.
There are about 1.20 crore women in self help groups in the state and with the elections round the corner the scheme for these members was floated in December last year. “The government will introduce a Bill in the assembly on Monday for the scheme,” the CM said.
After showering praises on the chief minister, Arun Kumar said that "abhaya hastam, was not just an assurance to women but is also the election symbol of the Congress party, keep this in mind and till the polls are over, he said."
Reddy said that the scheme will bring in a revolutionary change, which will benefit the women. The women members will contribute one rupee per day and the total contributed amount will be Rs 365 crores per year and the government also will contribute Rs 365 crores. Once the members reach the age of 60, they will get a minimum of Rs 500 and maximum of Rs 2118 as pension per month. A woman member who starts contributin to the scheme at the age of 18 will get a pension of Rs 2,118 as soon as she reaches 60 years of age. Along with the pension, insurance cover will also be provided to the beneficiaries through Aam Aadmi Beema Yojna.
A SHG woman named Manikyamma from Kadapa district, after appreciating the programmes of the chief minister requested him to ban liquor in the state. The chief minister replied saying that it will not be fruitful when government takes a decision forcibly and it would lead to illegal business and it had failed when the last government tried it. The liquor menace can be curbed by creating awareness among the people. The government allotted Rs 10 crore in this budget to crate awareness by means of advertisements, said the CM.
